IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Danny Ray
Ward
May 18, 1950 – January 26, 2025
Danny Ray Ward, 74, of Bryant, Arkansas, passed away on January 26, 2025, in Little Rock, Arkansas. He was born in Augusta, Arkansas, to Otes Jim "O.J." Ward and Margaret Ward Nelson Peebles.
Danny's love of music was lifelong, sparked in childhood when his family made sacrifices to buy him his first saxophone, a Selmer Mark VI. That gift became the foundation of his passion and career. He pursued music at Arkansas State University, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Music Performance in 1972. That same year, he met Mena Catherine Lowe, a fellow music student, and the two married in 1974. Danny and Mena moved to Holcomb, Missouri, where they both became high school music educators—Danny as a band director and Mena as a choir director. In 1976, while living in Missouri, they welcomed their only child, Daniel. From 1977 to 1983, Danny served as an alto saxophonist in the U.S. Air Force Band, performing around the world and for esteemed dignitaries, including President Jimmy Carter. After his time in the Air Force, the family relocated to Jonesboro, Arkansas, where Danny became the inaugural band director at Valley View, a position he held until 1995.
Danny is survived by his son, Daniel; his sister, Bonnie; his brother, Michael; his nephews, Jeff, David, and Zak; his nieces, Kelly and Jennifer; and many extended family members who will miss him dearly.
He is preceded in death by his father, O.J.; his mother, Margaret; his wife, Mena; his infant sister, Ann; his oldest brother, Otis and sister in law Annette; his brother-in-law, James; and his nephew, Patrick.
A memorial service with honors will be held at Dial & Dudley Funeral Home in Bryant, Arkansas, on Friday, February 7, at 1:00 PM. The family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to John L. McClellan Memorial Veterans' Hospital for the remarkable care they provided throughout Danny's life.
