Douglas Jon Nelson, 62, of Little Rock, died Saturday, July 12. He was born March 15, 1946, to the late Bernard and Edith Nelson. He served in the U.S. Navy, was a retired AT&T electronic communications technician and was a founding member of the British Motoring Club of Arkansas. He loved reading, playing the harmonica and driving his TR-4. Doug's rich life was lost to a 22-month battle with pancreatic cancer. He died peacefully at home, as he wanted, with family surrounding him.
He is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Gayle Cates Nelson; two children, Karen Erickson (Kirk) and Dr. Joseph Nelson (Shannon); a brother, Bernie Nelson (Rebecca); a special cousin, Jim Nelson (Phyllis); four grandchildren, Matt and Sidney Erickson, Lauren and Landon Nelson; two nieces, Rachel Nelson and Cynthia Fehrenbach (Dennis); numerous cousins; and many very special friends from AT&T and BMCA.
The family thanks Dr. Lawrence Mendelsohn for helping Doug maintain the quality of life he wanted during his illness. Thanks also go to Dr. Angelo Coppola Jr., Dr. Chris Cate, Dr. Chris Skelley, nurses and staff of 10A and 5A at Baptist Medical Center; and Annette's Nursing Service. Special thanks go to all the dear friends and family who helped Doug complete major things on his "to-do" list were there for him.
There will be a wake to celebrate Doug's life at 4 p.m. Saturday, July 19, at the Lake Corvallis Yacht Club, 14310 Corvallis Rd., Maumelle, Ar. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to; Union Rescue Mission, P.O. Box 164057, Little Rock, AR 72216; Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute at UAMS, 4301 W. Markham St. #623, Little Rock, AR 72205; Zion Lutheran Church of Avilla, 300 Avilla E., Alexander, AR 72002; or to your church or favorite charity.
