IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Jonathan Porter
Free
March 16, 1978 – March 3, 2025
Jonathan "Bub" Porter Free, 46, of Little Rock, Arkansas, passed away Monday, March 3, 2025, in Little Rock. He leaves behind his wife Kari and their four children: Payten, Seth, Jackson, and Logan. Jonathan is also survived by his parents Ronald and Judy Free; siblings Amanda (Richard) Carrington, Rachel (Bart) Bednar, and Matt (Caitlin) Free; as well as his second set of parents, Frank and Susan Opitz; sister Sarah (Zack) Andrews; and brother Grant Opitz. His legacy lives on through numerous nieces and nephews who adored him. Jonathan's furry companions, Sampson and Elle, also survive him.
Jon will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, and the love he had for his family and everyone he encountered. Though he faced personal struggles, many of which he suffered in silence, those very challenges shaped him into the compassionate soul he was. His own battles with mental illness gave him a profound empathy that he channeled into his work as a nurse, where he dedicated his life to supporting and uplifting those in need.
Jon had an innate ability to connect with others, especially those who were experiencing pain or hardship, because he understood that pain intimately. He never shied away from the difficult emotions of others, offering comfort and a listening ear. His empathy was a gift that made everyone around him feel seen and heard.
There was nothing that couldn't be made better by a long drive, the perfect playlist, or a walk by the river, a time when he would find solace in nature. Jon had a rare talent for finding joy in the little things. His wit, sarcasm, and unbeatable snack game could always brighten your day, even during the toughest times. A true glass-half-full kind of guy, he had the ability to find humor and positivity, no matter how dark the situation seemed.
While he kept his struggles private, his kindness and humor were reflections of the strength he gained from them. He understood what it was like to feel lost, and that understanding made him a beacon of light for others who were navigating similar battles. Jon's compassionate spirit lives on in his children, who carry his empathy and love for others forward.
A celebration of Jon's life will be held on March 16th at Murray Park Pavilion 2 at 2 PM. Blue or Grateful Dead attire is encouraged in honor of his spirit. In lieu of flowers, we ask that you consider planting a tree in his memory. You can do so by visiting:
