Obituary

We celebrate the life of Joseph Don Calhoun, a believer, father, grandfather, and friend, who peacefully left this world at the age of 83 on January 2nd, 2024 in Benton, Arkansas.

Don was born in Laneburg, Arkansas to the late Joseph Tillman "Tibb" Calhoun and Lucy Mae Stokes Calhoun. He was a proud graduate of Prescott High School, where he played football and basketball for the Curley Wolves. After high school, he attended Texarkana College on a basketball scholarship.

With the help of their father, Don and his older brother Max convinced the Army National Guard that they were enlisting as 17 year old twins. From the age of 15 until the mandatory retirement age of 60, Don served proudly in the Arkansas Army National Guard for 44 years 5 months and 10 days.

Don served full time for the National Guard at their Malvern unit for the majority of his military service. His experience as a mechanic at his father's Sinclair service station on South University Ave would later become invaluable while working on military vehicles, rebuilding a 1930 Model A Ford, and drag racing.

Don loved coaching and attending the ball games of his sons, which later turned into ball games for his grandchildren. It was always an honor that a number of men continued to call him Coach well after their playing days were over. He saved some of his best coaching for the TV while watching the Hogs. Despite being offered numerous opportunities to watch the Razorbacks in person, he often preferred to watch them on standard definition from the comfort of his own recliner.

The most important part of Don's life was the love and hope that came from Jesus Christ, the redeemer of his soul. That same faith was passed along to his twin sons, Cory and Cody and to their children. He had the pleasure of attending and serving his churches, Meadowcliff Baptist Church and Temple Baptist Church of Little Rock, and Fellowship Bible Church of Benton.

Don joins in glory his father, mother, and brother Max Allen (Rita) Calhoun. He is survived by his sons, Cory (Cari) Calhoun of Rogers and Cody (Jessica) Calhoun of Benton; remembered as an amazing Pop and Papa Don by his grandchildren Madalynn, Lincoln, Lucy, Emery and Josie Calhoun; cherished as a brother and pit-crew chief to Nick (Beverly) Calhoun; dear friend to his former spouse, Susan (Billy Don) Peters; and missed by a number of nieces, nephews, friends, and former classmates.

The family wishes to thank the incredible folks at the Myeloma Clinic of UAMS and to Mt. Carmel Community for your service to the Lord by caring for Don.

Visitation (2 pm) and service (3 pm) will be held on Saturday, January 6th at Fellowship Bible Church, 5724 Alcoa Rd. Benton, Arkansas. Graveside (3 pm) will be Monday January 8 at Pinecrest Cemetery, 7401 AR-5, Alexander, Arkansas.
