On 14 March 2011 one of the most precious people to ever walk on God's green earth went home to be with her Lord and Savior. Wanda Hendrix, touched so many lives and became family to a host of those whom she dearly loved.
It can truly be said that few people walk through this life that give of themselves more passionately than they get for themselves but Wanda was one of those rare gems. Throughout her entire life, she had so very little but was willing to give so much of herself and any resources she might have to others who were in need. She lived to love others and one of her greatest passions was needy children.
She would work everyday of the year until "Toy Hill" came around so she could help with the Toys for Tots Program because she was always thinking of others before herself.
The first weekend of December for the past 30 years, Wanda served as the self-appointed "Toy Hill Hostess" and she would make sure her Marines would have a cake and any other snacks she could personalize as only she could. And most all of the Marines who have come through India Company, 3rd Battalion, 23rd Marines will always remember Miss Wanda. Out of her limited resources, she would save up throughout the year so she would be able to purchase "Toy Hill" Dog Tags for those who participated in the event. She was confined to a wheel chair at "Toy Hill" 2010 with oxygen at her side but she wouldn't have missed it for the world.
Although she never served in the armed forces, she had such an impact on the Marines she served that she will be given military honors at her funeral, an honor generally reserved only for those who have worn the uniform. The Marines said it was the least they could do for someone so special.
There were many well known celebrities, both local and national that came to know Wanda because of her work with Toys for Tots and she would speak of them all just like they were family. She knew many of them well and they were all touched by her smile and generous spirit. But the most important of those she knew and those who knew her was her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She loved her Lord and although there are so many that will miss her greatly, she is at home now, free of sickness, free of want, free of loneliness and experiencing the joys of Heaven.
She attended the Little Rock Church of God and she would always manage to get small tokens of love to as many members as she could on special occassions like birthdays, Christmas and anniversaries.
She is survived by her cousins, Ron and Diane of Franklin,TN, Rodney Neal of Little Rock,AR and her (adopted "Little Brother") Marcus Sugg, Jr. and his family and countless friends whose lives were touched by her selfless love.
Everyone who knew Wanda will miss her smile, words of encouragement and the many calls she would make and the cards she would send for any special occassion that would give her reason to!
