William Ray "Bill" Pennington, 73, peacefully passed from this life at his home in Alexander, Arkansas just before 10:30 on Sunday morning, August 23, 2015.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 51 years, Joy (Calahan) Pennington; daughter and son-in-law, Russell and Lori Mercer of Alexander; grandsons, Caleb Mercer and Jacob Mercer of Alexander, and Will Looper of Maumelle, AR; granddaughter, Amber Watson of Bryant, AR; sisters, Frankie Tuberville of Camden, AR and Bertha and Jerry Watts of El Dorado, AR; sisters-in-law, Pat Phillips of Conway, AR and Kay Davis of Camden, AR; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin and Lola Pennington; a sister, Betty Leister; and daughter, Lana Looper.
Bill was born and raised in Camden, AR. He attended Harmony Grove High School then briefly worked on a tugboat prior to joining in US Navy Reserve with active duty service from 1960 – 1963 and reserve service from 1963 – 1965. He and Joy married in 1964 and raised their girls in southwest Little Rock. After the girls were grown, Joy joined Bill as he traveled across the country as a truck driver. These were very enjoyable times for them. Bill retired early from J.B. Hunt Transport due to the COPD that would eventually take his life. However, this freedom from work allowed them to spend a great deal of time with their beloved grandchildren as they were growing up. This was a blessing to all. While Bill did not attend church, he shared the plan of salvation and love of Jesus with his children and grandchildren.
Bill's illness worsened six months ago. During this time, he was well cared for at the VA Hospital and in the last couple of months, by Hospice. The family is very appreciative of their services and compassionate care.
Bill was very friendly, charming, intelligent, and had such a good sense of humor. He was a real handy man who could do almost anything. His illness robbed him of the ability to physically do the things he enjoyed but, thankfully, did not change his wonderful qualities. He remained positive and loved life. He will be greatly missed!
